Community Holocaust Commemoration

United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien will sponsor a community-wide Holocaust commemoration on Wednesday, April 11, 7 pm, at Temple Sinai (458 Lakeside Drive, Stamford), corresponding with Holocaust Remembrance Day. Jeannie Opdyke Smith, daughter of Irene Gut Opdyke, a Righteous Gentile who risked her life to save the lives of Jewish people during the Holocaust, will speak about her mother’s legacy, and the power of one person to change the world, even in the face of hate and violence. Holocaust survivors in our community will be honored during a candle-lighting remembrance ceremony. Especially at this time in history, as anti-Semitism, hatred and bigotry are empowered, remembering the Holocaust is an imperative.
